The 26-year-old Tsonga, who is appearing at the year-end championship for the first time in three years, hit 11 aces, 46 winners and almost as many unforced errors, 45. It was his third win in nine meetings against Nadal, who won three of 12 net points and committed 24 unforced errors.

COLDPLAY NAMED BEST ACT AT THE Q AWARDS

British band Coldplay were named the Best Act in the World Today at the Q Awards, held at London's Grosvenor House hotel last night (24.10.11).

The 'Mylo Xyloto' band beat off competition from the likes of Muse, Arcade Fire, Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys and U2 to take the coveted honour at this year's Q Awards - held at London's Grosvenor House hotel this afternoon (24.10.11) - which frontman Chris Martin compared to the Olympics.

He told BANG Showbiz: "It's exciting being nominated for a Q award. They're like our equivalent of the Olympics."

However, Coldplay missed out on both the Best Live Act accolade, which was presented to Biffy Clyro, and a special award to mark the 25th anniversary of the magazine, Greatest Act of the Last 25 Years, which was awarded to Irish rockers U2.

Other big winners at the ceremony, hosted by Al Murray, included Noel Gallagher, who was honoured with the Q Icon award, Take That frontman Gary Barlow, who was given the Classic Songwriter prize, and Siouxie Soux who was feted for her Outstanding Contribution to music.

Adele - who was not at the ceremony - received two awards, Best Track for 'Rolling in the Deep' and Best Female Artist, with Tinie Tempah picking up the prize for Best Male Artist.

WU LYF were named Best New Act with Lana Del Rey tipped as Next Big Thing while Ed Sheeran joked he would keep his Breakthrough Artist award on his manager's mantelpiece.

He said: "I'm keeping the award on my manager's mantelpiece. I still live on his sofa."

Meanwhile Fatboy Slim - aka Norman Cook - revealed he was thrilled to receive the Q Inspiration award because he doesn't consider himself inspiring.

He said: "It's nice being an inspiration, I'm used to being inspired by others so I don't always think of myself as an inspiration."

Coldplay will be playing The O2 Arena on 9 December 2011, click here to book tickets.

MURRAY SIZZLES AS LONDON NEARS

Andy Murray will head into the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals as arguably the hottest player on the planet after winning three consecutive titles during the Asian swing in Bangkok, Tokyo and Shanghai. He has won 25 of his past 26 matches.

Second seed Andy Murray won his third ATP World Tour title in three weeks in Asia as he retained his Shanghai Rolex Masters crown with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over third seed David Ferrer on Sunday.

Victory will see the 24-year-old Murray overtake Roger Federer at World No. 3 in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings. It will be the first time since 7 July, 2003, when he won his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, that Federer has ranked outside the Top 3.

"My goal for the last three-four months after the US Open was to try to finish as high as possible and win as many matches as I could," said Murray. "It's obviously been a great start. But I'm still not guaranteed to finish at No. 3. I'm still going to have to win some more matches. But if you finish in front of Federer in a year, then there's not many people the last five, six, seven years that have been able to say that. So that's obviously a nice thing if I can do it."

Murray has now won 25 of his past 26 matches. The Scot came into Shanghai on the back of title runs at the PTT Thailand Open in Bangkok (d. Young) and the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo (d. Nadal), and prior to a semi-final loss at the US Open (l. to Nadal) had triumphed at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati (d. Djokovic).

STONE ROSES ARE BACK!

Stone Roses re-form after 15 years with UK shows, promising to take it 'round the world'

After years of rancour, rumour and denial, The Stone Roses have finally confirmed what the world was waiting for - a reunion with at least two concerts next summer.

The Manchester group – widely considered to be among the most influential British artists of all-time - split up more than 15 years ago.

Guitarist John Squire and Ian Brown, boyhood friends who famously met in a sandpit aged four, stopped speaking altogether and most fans had long given up hope of ever seeing them perform together again.

But, after days of feverish speculation, the band’s four original members – Squire, Brown, bassist Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield and drummer Alan ‘Reni’ Wren – sat side-by-side in a London hotel to announce the ‘resurrection’ of the Roses.

Initially, they will play two shows at 75,000-capacity Heaton Park, in Manchester, on Friday June 29 and Saturday June 30, 2012.

ADELE CONFIRMS ARENA TOUR PLANS FOR 2012

She has overcome her stage fright & will play London's O2 Arena next year...

Adele has announced that she will be embarking on her first arena tour next February.

Following the huge success of her sophomore album 21, the Someone Like You singer told crowds at her gig at London's HMV Hammersmith Apollo on Tuesday that it will be her last time playing such an intimate venue.

The 23-year old, who previously admitted to suffering from stage fright, told her audience: "This is the last time you'll catch me at a venue like this. These will be my last theatre dates as I'm moving on to arenas. I'll be at the O2 in February."

After being booed by the crowd, the Rolling In The Deep hitmaker added: "Too many people want to see my shows, I have to. Don't worry, I'll still get into the crowd and everything."

Adele resumed her UK tour last week after she was forced to scrap a series of shows after being struck with a chest infection.

ENO TO STAGE OPERA ABOUT 1985 HIJACKING OF CRUISE SHIP ACHILLE LAURO

The Death of Klinghoffer focuses on murder of disabled Jewish passenger at hands of Palestinian paramilitaries

One of the most argued about operas of recent decades, based on the hijacking in 1985 of the cruise ship Achille Lauro by the Palestine Liberation Front, is to be staged by the English National Opera.

The ENO's artistic director, John Berry, said The Death of Klinghoffer was "probably the most controversial piece of the last 50 years". It focuses on the murder of Leon Klinghoffer, a wheelchair-bound Jewish American passenger who was shot in the head during the hijacking and thrown overboard.

The John Adams opera comes to London next February, part of a season, announced on Tuesday, that is striking for the number of new productions – 11, including four by living composers.

Berry believes The Death of Klinghoffer is Adams' best work, though not staged enough because of its sensitive story. It has been denounced by the Klinghoffer family as exploitative and biased towards the Palestinians. The work is to be directed by one of the UK's brightest young theatre directors, Tom Morris (known for War Horse, he is now artistic director at Bristol Old Vic).

The finale of ENO's 2011/12 season will be Damon Albarn's Doctor Dee, directed by Rufus Norris and to be first seen this summer at the Manchester festival. It will be ENO's Olympic contribution, being staged as part of the London 2012 festival.

There are two works by living German composers in the lineup: Detlev Glanert's Caligula, which is more about dictatorship than just Roman decadence, and Wolfgang Rihm's Jakob Lenz, an exploration of schizophrenia that will be staged at the Hampstead theatre, London.

The other new productions include Fiona Shaw directing, in October, a new version of The Marriage of Figaro; Barrie Kosky directing Castor and Pollux, by Rameau, an 18th century French composer rarely staged in the UK; Deborah Warner directing Eugene Onegin; Richard Jones directing The Tales of Hoffmann; Jonathan Kent directing The Flying Dutchman; and, following his terrific success with Peter Grimes, two years ago, David Alden will direct Billy Budd, ahead of the Benjamin Britten centenary in 2013.

Berry said ENO was committed to presenting living composers and contemporary opera, showing "how the power of opera can explore politically and socially charged issues of the world we live in and most importantly, communicate and connect with modern audiences".

ENO is currently basking in the glory of a fantastically well-received Terry Gilliam directed opera, The Damnation of Faust, following a hit and miss record of using film directors.

The company is also reviving some of its previous hits, including Jonathan Miller's The Elixir of Love, Catherine Malfitano's Tosca, David McVicar's Der Rosenkavalier and Anthony Minghella's Madam Butterfly.

BLINK 182 UK 2011 - TOUR DATES RESCHEDULED

Blink 182 today released a statement where they announced that their 2011 UK tour dates would be postponed and rescheduled for next year.

From Mark, Tom and Travis: Turns out we were mistaken as the album is taking longer than we thought and won't be out till later this year. We hoped we would have some new songs to play rather than do another 'greatest hits tour' which you all saw last summer. As much as we know our fans would be cool with that, we feel that we owe you guys something new when you spend your money to come see us. Frankly, it's what needs to continue for us to remain vital.

The three of us are working very hard to do what we set out to do when we re-formed - get a new blink-182 album recorded. Apologies to all of our fans who have bought tickets and were looking forward to the summer shows but we'll be back soon with the rescheduled dates in summer 2012, have a new album out and be able to play new songs for you all. Thanks for all of the continued support and understanding.

The O2 rescheduled dates are on the bands website www.blink182.com and are listed below as follows:

THE O2 RESCHEDULED DATES - for June 2012
Original date of Monday 18 July 2011 rescheduled to Friday 08 June 2012.
Original date of Tuesday 19 July 2011 rescheduled to Saturday 09 June 2012.

Original tickets will be valid for the rescheduled dates. For further information or queries regarding the rescheduled dates please contact the ticket agent where you purchased your tickets.

WILLIAM SISTERS MAY MISS WIMBLEDON

There are gathering doubts about whether either of the Williams sisters will be fit to challenge for this summer’s Wimbledon title.

Venus has played only one tournament in the past seven months, and has decided against entering any events in the next few weeks. Serena has had emergency treatment to remove a blood clot from her lung.

Venus, who completed just two matches at January’s Australian Open before retiring after a few points of her third-round match because of an abdominal injury, did not play in Miami because of the same condition.

Though she is entered in the clay-court tournament at Madrid’s Caja Magica that starts in late April, and then to play at Rome’s Foro Italico the week after, her name was added automatically to the lists as they are mandatory events, so that is no indication that she actually intends to play in Spain or Italy.

Serena is also having to deal with a freak foot injury that was sustained when she stepped on some broken glass in a restaurant in Munich last July. She has not played any competitive tennis since winning Wimbledon.

Since the start of the Millennium, there has only been one Wimbledon final that did not feature at least one of the Williams sisters, which was in 2006 when France’s Amelie Mauresmo defeated Justine Henin of Belgium.

Executives at the women’s tour must be feeling increasingly concerned about the futures of the sisters, as Venus turns 31 in June and Serena starts her thirties in September. When the ranking list is updated next Monday morning, both sisters will be outside the top 10.

The sisters have always tended to play a light schedule outside the grand slams, but it has now reached the extraordinary situation that the last four tournaments that Venus has played have been the last four majors. So it is now around 10 months since she played a tournament that was not a slam.

WIMBLEDON TO WAIVE OLYMPICS DRESS CODE

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal could paint the town red at London 2012 after the All England Club agreed to waive their all-white dress code in a bid to distinguish the Olympic competition from the Wimbledon Championships.

The All England Championship rules state that during Wimbledon all players must wear ‘almost entirely white' clothing but chief executive Ian Ritchie has confirmed the regulations will not be enforced during London 2012.

The world famous south London venue is set to host the Olympic tennis competition in 2012 for the first time since 1908 with the nine days of competition expected to begin on July 28 - just 20 days after the 2012 men's Wimbledon final.

And while London 2012 director of sport and venues Debbie Jevans confirmed only minimal temporary changes will be made to the All England Club during the Games, organisers are keen to give the Olympic competition its own identity.

Numerous past players - including Ann White and John McEnroe - have felt the wrath of the All England Club for attempting to flout the dress code, but Ritchie insists the decision was not made through gritted teeth.

"No [it was not a major issue] is the short answer," said Ritchie. "We want to be clear and I think there will be a great interest in this competition.

"The top players in the world will be here and we hope to some extent there will be a different type of audience.

"We have been very supportive [to Locog] throughout the process but it is not the Championships. It will be its own competition, have its own style and it will play out in its very own way.

"The idea was never to have a repeat of the Championships.

"And so with regards to the players' kits we are perfectly happy for there to be some colour."

With less than three weeks between the Championships and the expected start of the Olympic competition - the poorer relation of the two in terms of prestige - concerns have been expressed that tennis fatigue would set in.

That could in turn prompt a lack of public interest and therefore some empty seats - a categorical no-no in the eyes of both Locog and the International Olympic Committee, after so many half-full venues at Beijing 2008.

But Jevans, a former Junior Wimbledon runner-up who sits on the board of the All England Club, believes the British public have the appetite for both competitions.

"We are not worried about tennis fatigue because there will be a lot of people who do not get tickets for the Championships," said Jevans.

"It gives them the chance to come and see the best players in the world."

Jevans also revealed that the expected daily capacity at Wimbledon during Games time will be approximately 26,000 compared to the 40,000 during the Championships.

There will be 172 athletes competing as mixed doubles makes its Olympic debut in 2012 while there will be 160 ball boys/girls and 180 technical officials.

In total, 12 of the courts will be used for competition including Centre Court, courts one and two, court seven, 11 and 12 and courts 14-19 but not court three.

Matches will be scheduled to get underway each day at 11:00 with only one session, ensuring the estimated close of play will be 20:00 with few, if any, night matches expected to take place under Centre Court's £100m retractable roof.

Locog expect that, with the help of the Olympic Route Network, the journey for athletes staying in the Olympic Village will take 45 minutes.

HAS LADY GAGA GONE...GAGA?

Lady Gaga grows horns and claims she's channelling Alexander McQueen

She may be renowned for her fanciful soundbites, but Lady Gaga has now gone full-fledged silly, claiming she has magical bony protrusions which "come out when I'm inspired". Oh yes, and she is channeling the ghost of Alexander McQueen.

Lady Gaga has shown off her skin-bumps in a few places so far, including on the cover of latest single Born This Way and in a new photo-shoot for Harper's Bazaar. "Gaga emerged from make-up at our shoot with pointy shoulders and sharp protrusions on her forehead and cheekbones," explained Bazaar editor Laura Brown. It's a look more Klingon than Björk, but when writer Derek Blasberg asked Gaga about the get-up, she insisted that they are all natural.

Gaga also claims that the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen is the composer of her latest single, released on 11 February. "Right after he died, I wrote Born This Way." She was particularly struck when the release date for the song turned out to be the anniversary of McQueen's death. "When I heard that, I knew: I didn't even write the fucking song! He did!"

KYLIE'S APHRODITE TOUR: A SPECTACLE HARD TO BE BEAT

Kylie Minogue’s “Aphrodite: Les Folies” is a spectacle hard to beat. The stage is created by WET Design, known for the Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas that is a clue for what you will see on stage.

Taking its cue from “Aphrodite,” her most recent album, it resembles an ancient Greek temple, with integrated video screens. Tiers of her body-beautiful dancers elegantly splash fans in the front rows.

Kylie’s website quotes a budget of $25 million for staging a 63-date tour visiting 23 countries. Her five shows at London’s O2 continue tonight and tomorrow. Then she’s off to Japan, Canada, Mexico and the U.S., returning to her native Australia in June.

The Greek theme allows Kylie, 42, to indulge her core fanbase. There are lashings of homoerotic imagery. Videos pay as much homage to Robert Mapplethorpe’s more risque photography as is possible in a family show. Toned male dancers cavort in nothing more than a strategic sliver of gold lame.

Designers Dolce & Gabbana dress Kylie more modestly. She wears a succession of spuriously Hellenic outfits, mostly in white, gold and silver. She looks as immaculate as her publicity photographs at all times. Not even a bead of sweat disturbs her pristine complexion. Kylie remains sanitized throughout.

This show is not to be missed! Tickets still available for tonight’s and tomorrow’s shows at The O2.

BOB DYLAN PERFORMS HIS FIRST EVER GIG IN CHINA

Bob Dylan played his first ever gig in China last Wednesday (April 6).

He was able to perform in the country's capital city Beijing after agreeing to play a set that had been pre-approved by Chinese authorities.

The pre-approved setlist was agreed after an attempt by promoters to bring the folk legend to China failed in 2010. Permission was denied then by the country's Culture Ministry, which must approve every concert that takes place in China.

The approval meant that Dylan could not play any material that the authorities deemed politically sensitive, such as the song 'The Times They Are A-Changin'.

According to Billboard, Dylan played for two hours in the 5,000-capacity Workers Gymnasium. He played a career-spanning set which included 'Like A Rolling Stone', 'All Along The Watchtower' and 'Highway 61 Revisited'.

Bob Dylan is performing in London on 18th June 2011. Click here to see Bob Dylan tickets.

ADELE BREAKS MADONNA'S ALBUM RECORD AND CLOSES IN ON BOB MARLEY

London singer's 21 tops UK charts for 10th consecutive week, eclipsing record of material girl at height of popularity in 1990. It was a record held by Madonna for 21 years but Adele has broken it with her second album, coincidentally entitled 21, which on Sunday topped the UK charts for the 10th consecutive week – the longest ever for a UK album by a female solo artist.

Remarkably, more than 257,000 copies of the album were bought in the UK last week, a week-on-week increase of 65% – the strongest seven-day sales figures for the record yet.
The 22-year old released 21 in January, since when it has also topped the album charts in 17 European countries and the US.

The London-born singer's debut album 19 also held steady at no 2 in the UK charts on Sunday, seeing off competition from Ronan Keating's collaboration with Burt Bacharach, When Ronan Met Burt.
The effect of Mother's Day was a factor but this alone failed to account for Adele's success, according to Martin Talbot, managing director of the Official Charts Company.

"This is notoriously one of the quietest times of the year for the record industry, so what she has achieved is astonishing," he said.

"She has gone from being a promising young artist, who existed slightly in the slipstream of acts like Duffy, to become the biggest act in the UK by a country mile.

"To do so well, you've often got to be quite cheesy, but she's the opposite of cheese – she's popular right across the spectrum."

The record was set by Madonna's 1990 Immaculate Collection, a compilation. The last act to spend 10 straight weeks at no 1 with a studio album was Dire Straits with Brothers in Arms in 1986. The album with the record for the most consecutive weeks at no 1 is Bob Marley and the Wailers' Legend, a compilation which achieved 12 weeks in 1984.

On Monday, Ladbrokes was offering odds of 1/6 on Adele beating that record.
"Adele looks set to smash Marley's record and in the process could set one which lasts for just as long," said a Ladbrokes spokesman. The success of Adele's two albums has also boosted the fortunes of her record label, the independent XL. In the year to date, it has enjoyed a 9% share of the UK market, whereas the weakest performing of the major labels – EMI Music – accounted for only 12%. Between them, Adele's two albums have sold more than 2.2m copies in the UK this year.

"There is none of the scandal that helped sell Amy Winehouse," said Alexis Petridis, the Guardian's chief pop critic.

"Adele did go to the Brit School but she doesn't sound like the product of endless focus groups – she just seems normal, and there's something attainable and lovely about that."

Also in the top 10 albums chart on Sunday were new entries of wildly different pedigree: X Factor singer Mary Byrne, who charted at no 6; Radiohead, who reached no 7 with the CD release of The King Of Limbs; and Britney Spears, whose comeback album Femme Fatale charted at no 8.

The only disappointment for Adele, who starts a UK tour on Thursday 14 April, was that her song Someone Like You was knocked from the no 1 slot on the singles chart.

WIMBLEDON TO BROADCAST IN 3D

Proud of its age-old traditions, Wimbledon has embraced the rapid changes in technology in recent years as smoothly as a Roger Federer forehand and now the world's most prestigious tennis tournament is going 3D.

Ian Ritchie, chief executive of the All England Club in the leafy suburbs of south west London since 2005, has presided over a stunning transformation of the grounds and on Monday he announced that fans across the world would be able to watch this year's championships in 3D vision at home and in cinemas.

In partnership with Sony and host broadcaster the BBC, this year's men's singles semi-finals and men's and women's finals will be filmed in 3D and beamed to around 600 suitable cinemas around the globe as well as to national broadcasters.

While famous for its strict white clothing rules, strawberries and cream and ivy-clad balconies, Wimbledon has managed to move swiftly with the times.

Ritchie, whose background is in television, said that should come as no surprise.

"Starting way back, the first ever transmission in colour the BBC put out was from Wimbledon so we were innovators then," he said.

"Now there is an opportunity to expand into 3D broadcasts and it's very exciting. But as far as we are concerned it's that classic combination of tradition and innovation.

"Technically we like to be at the forefront of things and 3D is going to be a very interesting feature, not just for broadcasters but for cinemagoers around the world too," added Ritchie.

"Not everyone can be here during the championships so it's another opportunity for fans to feel a bit closer to the action.

"We see ourselves as the best tennis event in the world but we want to be seen as one of the best sporting events. If you stand still you fall behind."

Ritchie, responsible for securing multi-million pounds broadcasting deals with the BBC and American company NBC, is approaching his busiest time of the year with Wimbledon less than four months away.

A new addition for the 2011 tournament will be a Court Three showcourt - the completion of which concludes a 10-year improvement programme that included a revamped Centre Court complete with sliding roof, a new bull-ring type Court Two and the introduction of HawkEye technology.

Ritchie reeled off impressive statistics about 11 million hits on the tournament website last year and the launch of a smartphone application that has one million users.

However, while he welcomes the gizmos Ritchie is happy some things remain the same - at least until the Olympics take over the hallowed turf for a week in 2012.

"Yes, the white clothing rule will be relaxed and our strict advertising rules," he said. "They can wear multi-coloured clothing, whatever they want to wear. It's their event.

"It will look quite different and it will be an interesting experience for the players because usually they just come here once a year but in 2012 they'll be back two weeks later. It will be interesting how they cope with that."

DJOKOVIC TARGETS WIMBLEDON TITLE

World number three Novak Djokovic has set his sights on winning a maiden Wimbledon title and has committed to playing at the Queen's Club in preparation.

The Serb beat Andy Murray in the Australian Open final for his second Grand Slam triumph and has quickly turned his thoughts to winning on grass.

"Wimbledon is the most important tournament of the year for me," the 23-year-old, who has twice reached the semi-finals at the All England Club, told the BBC.

"The Queen's Club has got great grass courts, it's a great atmosphere with always a packed house of spectators, and you just feel good there.

"Rafa (Nadal) and I had an incredible match in the Queen's final in 2008 and it was the closest I ever got to a grass-court title.

"I really want to do well at Queen's and Wimbledon this year."

Djokovic will once again be joined at Queen's by Nadal, the Spaniard also confirming his presence as he prepares to defend his Wimbledon title.

The AEGON Championship takes place at Queen's from June 6-12 while Wimbledon begins a week later on June 20.

U2 CONFIRM GLASTONBURY HEADLINE SPOT

The Edge made the announcement in a video speech played at the NME Awards ceremony

It was the worst kept secret in the music world, but more than a few music fans will be reaching for their wellies and sunglasses following the confirmation by U2 that the band will headline the Glastonbury festival's Friday night slot this year.

U2's guitarist, The Edge, made the announcement in a video speech played at the NME Awards ceremony in London shortly after Glastonbury was named Best Festival.

"Congratulations to Michael and Emily [Eavis] and the rest of the team for the continued success of Glastonbury," he said. "It's more a way of life than a festival."

The musician then recalled his guest appearance with Muse at Glastonbury in 2010, when he joined the British band on the Pyramid stage, before delivering the news that U2 will be playing at the event on 24 June .

"I have to say there is something really special and iconic about that stage. So, we're all looking forward to coming back to pick up where I left off," he said.

"U2 will be playing on June 24. And we're so excited to get to play in front of the world's greatest festival audience. We'll see you there!"

The Irish band was originally set to headline the festival in 2010 but was forced to pull out after its lead singer, Bono, picked up a back injury while preparing for a tour in the US. At the time Bono said: "We really wanted to be there to do something really special. We even wrote a song especially for the festival."

Gorillaz, fronted by Damon Albarn, were late replacements but garnered mixed reviews from fans and critics for their performance at the festival's 40th anniversary. There was also a varied reaction to the announcement by U2.

"U2, Coldplay and Beyonce healing Glastonbury. It's now a festival for the middle class and accountants," tweeted Joe Richardson in York whose displeasure was typical of some others.

However, excitement at the prospect of watching the band at the iconic event was also palpable, with U2's legion of followers tweeting their happiness in a range of languages.

At the NME awards last night, goth rockers My Chemical Romance triumphed with two prizes. The New Jersey outfit were crowned best international band, and also took the award for best video for Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na).

For the fourth successive year stadium rockers Muse were also winners, walking away with best British band having seen off Arctic Monkeys, Foals, Kasabian and Biffy Clyro.

Laura Marling continued her winning run after picking up a surprise award for best British female at the Brit Awards last week, which saw sales of her acclaimed second album 'I Speak Because I can' leap as a result, moving from No 80 to No 21 in the chart. Last night at the Brixton Academy, she picked up a gong for best solo artist, seeing off challenges from starrier names, such as Kanye West.

ADELE MATCHES THE BEATLES IN LATEST CHART SUCCESS

Singer becomes first living artist since the Fab Four to have two releases in each of the top five singles and album charts at once.

Adele has become the first artist since the Beatles to have two top five singles and two top five albums in the charts at the same time. Buoyed by her rendition at last week's Brit awards, the singer's newest single, Someone Like You, jumped 46 spots to become her first No 1 hit. That song joins Rolling in the Deep, which sits at No 4; on the album charts, Adele's first two LPs – 21 and 19 – are also at No 1 and No 4 respectively.

"It's amazing," Adele told BBC Radio 1. "I've never had a No 1 single [before]. I'm probably annoying everyone as well, as I cried at the Brits and everything. I'm just so overwhelmed – I can't believe the response to it."

BRIT AWARDS 2011: TAKE THAT WIN BEST BRITISH GROUP 21 YEARS AFTER THEIR DEBUT

It may only take a minute to fall in love, but to reach the zenith of your artistic career can take a while longer, as Take That have discovered.

After 17 No 1 hits, pop world domination, an acrimonious split and a dewy-eyed reunion, the phenomenally successful boy-turned-manband were finally crowned best British group at the Brit awards, 21 years after their first performance on the cheesy late-night TV show The Hitman & Her.

Young pretender Tinie Tempah may have taken home more awards – the rapper received statuettes for both British breakthrough act and best single for the infectious Pass Out – but the night belonged to the veteran band.

It was most certainly the campest, and possibly the most spectacular, opening to any Brit awards, the boys took to the stage flanked by Take That soldiers, who by the end of the performance were only in their underwear.

The revamped Brits were styled as a music-centric event rather than the bacchanalian back-patting exercise of the past. And there was evidence that the 1,000-strong voting academy, which this year included music performers for the first time as well as the usual promoters, producers, publishers and retailers, wanted to celebrate "quality" music.

But the revamp could not deflect from the crowning of Take That, the peak of an extraordinary 12 months in which the group's most recent album, Progress, became the fastest-selling of the decade with first-day sales of more than 235,000, the highest since Oasis released Be Here Now in 1997.

Take That's accompanying tour – the biggest in UK history – sold out in minutes, and promises to be the most spectacular that "Thatters", as their fans are known, have ever seen.

The band split amid accusations, insults and alcoholism in 1995. Robbie Williams, ever the bad boy of the group, went on to achieve huge success as a solo act – and has won more Brit awards than any other artist. His debut album, Life Thru a Lens, went straight to No 1, and hits such as Angels lodged themselves firmly in the karaoke canon.

But after Williams's career hit the buffers, the newly-reformed four-piece Take That went on to have success without himwith The Ultimate tour in 2006, and The Circus album and tour in 2008.

After winning the award for best group, Mark Owen tear-jearkingly turned to Williams. "Rob, thanks for coming back mate," he said over the screams. Williams response was fittingly a throw back to the 90s, as he shouted "shabba!" into the mike.

Gary Barlow, the main songwriter of the band, recently turned 40, joining Jason Orange who is the same age, and Howard Donald, 42, in the realm of fortysomethings. Williams and Owen are not far behind at 37 and 39.

Take That's award – the first time they have been crowned best British band despite three previous nominations – comes eight months after Williams announced he was rejoining the band.

ARCADE FIRE TO BRING THE SUBURBS TO HYDE PARK

Canadian band announce biggest ever UK gig this summer, with support from Mumford & Sons, Beirut and the Vaccines.

Arcade Fire have announced their biggest ever UK gig at London's Hyde Park this summer. The Canadian band will also reportedly release a new version of their latest album, The Suburbs, including an original film by Spike Jonze.

The 30 June gig in Hyde Park is Arcade Fire's only UK date so far this year, despite scheduled appearances at festivals in the USA and Europe. They will headline the venue just a week after Kings of Leon play two dates, plus there will be support from Mumford & Sons, Beirut and the Vaccines. Though Arcade Fire played the O2 Arena on their last visit to London, Hyde Park is about three times bigger – some 60,000 fans will have the chance to buy tickets, which go on sale this Friday.

Meanwhile, fans of The Suburbs have something else to look forward to. According to Germany's Spex magazine (via Consequence of Sound), Arcade Fire plan to reissue their third album in May. This will reportedly include a photobook, new songs and a DVD of Spike Jonze's Scenes from the Suburbs, which premieres at the Berlin international film festival next month. Scenes from this short film previously appeared in the video for the album's title track.

Arcade Fire's The Suburbs has been nominated for three Grammy awards, including album of the year, as well as two Brits. It debuted at No 1 in the UK charts.
