COLDPLAY NAMED BEST ACT AT THE Q AWARDS

British band Coldplay were named the Best Act in the World Today at the Q Awards, held at London's Grosvenor House hotel last night (24.10.11).

The 'Mylo Xyloto' band beat off competition from the likes of Muse, Arcade Fire, Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys and U2 to take the coveted honour at this year's Q Awards - held at London's Grosvenor House hotel this afternoon (24.10.11) - which frontman Chris Martin compared to the Olympics.

He told BANG Showbiz: "It's exciting being nominated for a Q award. They're like our equivalent of the Olympics."

However, Coldplay missed out on both the Best Live Act accolade, which was presented to Biffy Clyro, and a special award to mark the 25th anniversary of the magazine, Greatest Act of the Last 25 Years, which was awarded to Irish rockers U2.

Other big winners at the ceremony, hosted by Al Murray, included Noel Gallagher, who was honoured with the Q Icon award, Take That frontman Gary Barlow, who was given the Classic Songwriter prize, and Siouxie Soux who was feted for her Outstanding Contribution to music.

Adele - who was not at the ceremony - received two awards, Best Track for 'Rolling in the Deep' and Best Female Artist, with Tinie Tempah picking up the prize for Best Male Artist.

WU LYF were named Best New Act with Lana Del Rey tipped as Next Big Thing while Ed Sheeran joked he would keep his Breakthrough Artist award on his manager's mantelpiece.

He said: "I'm keeping the award on my manager's mantelpiece. I still live on his sofa."

Meanwhile Fatboy Slim - aka Norman Cook - revealed he was thrilled to receive the Q Inspiration award because he doesn't consider himself inspiring.

He said: "It's nice being an inspiration, I'm used to being inspired by others so I don't always think of myself as an inspiration."

Coldplay will be playing The O2 Arena on 9 December 2011, click here to book tickets.

MURRAY SIZZLES AS LONDON NEARS

Andy Murray will head into the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals as arguably the hottest player on the planet after winning three consecutive titles during the Asian swing in Bangkok, Tokyo and Shanghai. He has won 25 of his past 26 matches.

Second seed Andy Murray won his third ATP World Tour title in three weeks in Asia as he retained his Shanghai Rolex Masters crown with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over third seed David Ferrer on Sunday.

Victory will see the 24-year-old Murray overtake Roger Federer at World No. 3 in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings. It will be the first time since 7 July, 2003, when he won his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, that Federer has ranked outside the Top 3.

"My goal for the last three-four months after the US Open was to try to finish as high as possible and win as many matches as I could," said Murray. "It's obviously been a great start. But I'm still not guaranteed to finish at No. 3. I'm still going to have to win some more matches. But if you finish in front of Federer in a year, then there's not many people the last five, six, seven years that have been able to say that. So that's obviously a nice thing if I can do it."

Murray has now won 25 of his past 26 matches. The Scot came into Shanghai on the back of title runs at the PTT Thailand Open in Bangkok (d. Young) and the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo (d. Nadal), and prior to a semi-final loss at the US Open (l. to Nadal) had triumphed at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati (d. Djokovic).

STONE ROSES ARE BACK!

Stone Roses re-form after 15 years with UK shows, promising to take it 'round the world'

After years of rancour, rumour and denial, The Stone Roses have finally confirmed what the world was waiting for - a reunion with at least two concerts next summer.

The Manchester group – widely considered to be among the most influential British artists of all-time - split up more than 15 years ago.

Guitarist John Squire and Ian Brown, boyhood friends who famously met in a sandpit aged four, stopped speaking altogether and most fans had long given up hope of ever seeing them perform together again.

But, after days of feverish speculation, the band’s four original members – Squire, Brown, bassist Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield and drummer Alan ‘Reni’ Wren – sat side-by-side in a London hotel to announce the ‘resurrection’ of the Roses.

Initially, they will play two shows at 75,000-capacity Heaton Park, in Manchester, on Friday June 29 and Saturday June 30, 2012.
